The tempos of institutional programming leave very little room to react in real time to unexpected situations and needs in the world of culture, situations that, though they may be ephemeral, cannot be put off. Urgency is the enemy of seasonal programming. In order to remedy this situation, we present URGENT!, a season conceived as an element of “deprogramming” rather than programming, something “undisciplinary” rather than disciplinary. In complete freedom of format and opinion, this season meet the challenges posed by situations that require, now or never, a response that takes their pressing nature fully into account.

This first session, Money, is devoted to the question of money, from an elementary level (the pocket) to systemic focuses on the financial crisis. From “formal” debate and critique to the most festive formats. Our take on this critical situation takes the shape of such activities as: a presentation of the project Dyndy – Engineering the Future of Money; a discussion with Boris Groys; a lecture-show by María Eloy-García, Sayak Valencia, Antonio Baños, Isidro López and El Mundo Today; a concert featuring such bands as Els Surfing Sirles, Los Punsetes, Hidrogenesse and Boncompain; an intervention by Ramón Williams; film showings; and other entertainment.

PROGRAMME

5.30 p.m.
After Money, Jaromil Rojo and Marco Sachy
English, with simultaneous translation

Free culture
has become a stimulating focus of debate on the factors conditioning the creation of wealth and its exploitation by capitalism, capable of reproducing it only on its own terms. Taking their inspiration from Bernard Lietaer and Gilles Deleuze, as well as from various local experiences of microfinance and complementary currency, Jaromil Rojo and Marco Sachy have developed Dyndy – Engineering the Future of Money, a project that reclaims alternative narratives to the present monopoly occupied by the economy, positioning itself, provocatively, on the horizon of post-capitalist sustainability.

6.30 p.m.
Economy of the artistic display, Boris Groys
English, with simultaneous translation

Presented by Iván de la Nuez

The author of The Communist Postscript, Sobre lo nuevo. Ensayo de una economía cultural (2005) and Bajo sospecha. Una fenomenología de los medios (2008), Boris Groys is one of the most lucid voices that has reached us from behind the former Iron Curtain. A philosopher, media theorist, art critic and curator, Groys finds in art a laboratory for researching into such crucial issues as participation and the polarisation of intellectual work. One more step for the art, market and merchandising constellation. In this lecture, Groys will discuss how the economy of an art whose creative act coincides with that of its exhibition actually works.

7.30 p.m.
Planet Money.
Participants: María Eloy-García, Sayak Valencia, Antonio Baños, Isidro López.
Moderated by: El Mundo Today (Kike García and Xavi Puig)

Counter-information and imaginary reports are the identifying features of the satirical online journalism of El Mundo Today, who will moderate this lecture-show. The event will revolve around the interventions of Isidro López (co-author of Fin de ciclo), the essayist and performer Sayak Valencia (Capitalismo Gore, 2010), the poet María Eloy-García (Cuánto dura cuanto, 2007) and the journalist Antonio Baños (La economía no existe, 2009). An attempt to restore semantic meaning to words (crisis, debt, credit, risk, recovery, finances) accompanied by criticism of the political economy and humour of substance.

9.30 p.m.

Cantante y sonante,
with Los Punsetes, Hidrogenesse, Els Surfing Sirles and Boncompain

Closing the session, this concert will take us on an imaginary collective raid on money through a number of great songs inspired by the subject. A concert of covers especially prepared for the occasion, served up by the acid power pop of Los Punsetes, the surreal, electronic art rock of Hidrogenesse, the uncomplicated garage rock of Els Surfing Sirles and the Catalan singer-songwriter cabaret of Boncompain. ABBA, Patti Smith, Charol, Obús, etc., as you never heard them before.

This activity is accompanied by the presentation of the 11th Doropædia (“the golden encyclopaedia”), a collector’s edition of mini-CDs containing songs, texts and multimedia and art content. These box sets take the form of monographic studies featuring different visions of a particular issue, in this case “money”. A project conceived by Producciones Doradas presented this year at the CCCB.
