Change the Story

A new sensibility towards nature

A lecture series with writers and philosophers who, in their work, try to situate the human experience in the context of our natural surroundings in order to transform our way of seeing the planet.

In recent decades it has become evident that humans have long ceased to have a harmonious relationship with the planet. Rather, they have mainly been occupied in extracting its resources. The climate emergency we are experiencing today as a result of this unequal relationship obliges us to rethink our connection with the planet and how to restore it. It is not only a matter of remedies in the form of technical ways of reversing global warming, but we must also look at our planet with other eyes.

Our relationship with nature has become polarised between ideas of an inexhaustible source of resources and an otherness in danger which must be protected and conserved, thus risking its being museumised. Yet, things have not always been like this. Humans have been able to live in harmony with their surroundings for millennia, without seeing nature as a different otherness but, rather, as an inseparable part of our own condition. For some time now, philosophers and writers have placed reflection about nature at the centre of their work, promoting a new sensibility towards our surroundings and trying to bring out again this now damaged connection with nature. We will not be able to reverse the present situation if we are unable to experience our planet with wonder and emotion, from a comprehensive standpoint that gives sense to our lives and our place in the world.
