A development economist, she has been based in Geneva since 1992, working as an independent researcher for various institutions and organisations, including the United Nations University, the World Institute for Development Economic Research (Helsinki), the International Labour Organization, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

She has published more than 70 academic and research articles and chapters in books as well as two monographic studies on issues related with the post-Cold War transformation of Eastern European countries, with particular emphasis on the defence industry.
