Toni Casares

Toni Casares (Barcelona, 1965) is a playwright and present director of the Sala Beckett theatre. He was a founding member of the Aula de Teatre (Theatre Seminar) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona where he directed several plays including Josep Maria Benet i Jornet’s Descripció d’un paisatge (Description of a Landscape, 1996) and Pierre Corneille’s El Cid (2001). He was also general coordinator of the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia Drama Centre. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Contemporary Catalan Theatre Artistic Advisory Board of the TNC (National Theatre of Catalonia) where he directed La Plaça del Diamant (Time of the Doves), an adaptation of Mercè Rodoreda’s novel by Benet i Jornet (2007), and Albert Espinosa’s El club de les palles (The Wanking Club, 2004). Since 2011 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Culture Council of Barcelona. At the Sala Beckett theatre, in addition to many other works, he has directed Henrik Ibsen’s Little Eyolf (2011) and, more recently, George Kaplan by Frédéric Sonntag, which was co-produced by the 2013 Grec Festival.
