Timothy Snyder

Expert on the history of contemporary Europe

Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, Timothy D. Snyder is one of the world’s leading experts on the history of Europe and one of the most distinguished intellectuals in the English-speaking world. He has made major contributions in European historiography, especially with his studies of the Holocaust, the Second World War, and totalitarian regimes. He is well versed in Eastern European languages, among them Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Yiddish, and his books have been published in more than thirty-three countries. Notable in his prolific array of publications are Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin (published in Spanish as Tierras de sangre: Europa entre Hitler y Stalin by Galaxia Gutenberg, 2011), which was awarded the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought in 2013, Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning (in Spanish as Tierra negra. El Holocausto como historia y advertencia, Galaxia Gutenberg 2015), and the book co-authored with the historian Tony Judt Thinking the Twentieth Century (in Spanish as Pensar el siglo XX, Taurus, 2012). In his recent works, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century (in Catalan, Sobre la tirania: 20 lliçons que hem d’aprendre del segle XX, Destino, 2017) and The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America (in Spanish as, El camino hacia la no libertad,Galaxia Gutenberg, 2018), Snyder focuses on more recent history to warn of the dangers of present-day antidemocratic trends. His last book is Our Malady (Crown, 2020, published in Spanish by Galaxia Gutenberg), an essay on the fragility of health, which in the United States is not recognized as a human right, but without which rights and freedoms have no meaning. Timothy Snyder also writes for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, and The Guardian. He has received prestigious awards, among them the Havel Foundation Prize, the Literature Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as official awards from the government of Estonia, Poland and Lithuania.
