Suzanne Ciani

Sound deigner and composer

Nominated for five Grammys, a true electronic music pioneer and neoclassical composer, when we talk about Suzanne Ciani we talk about one of the most incredible creative minds that contemporary music has seen.

After an impeccable forty-year professional career Ciani is a figure of huge importance in understanding the roots of synthetic music and unsurprisingly joins the ranks of other female electronic music luminaires, such as Wendy Carlos, Delia Derbyshire and Laurie Spiegel.

Her work has not only impacted the course of the music industry, it has also traversed disciplines to leave her mark in the world of cinema, video games and advertising -she is responsible for the gestation of the pop-and-pour sound of Coca-Cola, a classic sound effect that most of us have experienced from childhood on countless television commercials. She also provided the voice and sound of the revolutionary pinball machine Xenon by Bally.

Her teacher and mentor was the luminary and pioneering creator of the Don Buchla sound synthesizer created in the 1960s, from whom she learnt first-hand much of his technical knowledge and also inherited his devout love for the Buchla synthesizer that to this day accompanies Ciani on stage.
