Sergio Vila-Sanjuán

A journalist, novelist, and playwright, he is editor of the Cultura/s supplement of the daily La Vanguardia. He is author of the Barcelona Trilogy, consisting of three novels—Una heredera de Barcelona (A Barcelona Heiress), Estaba en el aire (It Was in the Air, winner of the 2013 Nadal Prize), and El informe Casabona (Casabona report), all published by Destino—which combines family memoir and a chronicle of the times. He has also written plays, among them El club de la escalera (The Staircase Club) and La agente literaria (The Literary Agent), which was premiered in April 2024 in the Teatre Akadèmia, Barcelona. Moreover, he is author of the first book about Miquel Barceló, Agenda Barceló (Ámbit, 1984).

He has published several titles on literary, publishing, and artistic themes, among them Pasando página (Turning the Page, Destino, 2003), Código best seller (Best Seller Code, Alianza, 2014), and Vargas Llosa sube al escenario (Vargas Llosa Takes the Stage, La Vanguardia, 2022), as well as the biography El joven Porcel (The Young Porcel, Destino, 2020). His most recent book is es Cultura española en democracia. Una crónica breve de 50 años 1975-2024 (Spanish Culture in Democracy; A Brief Chronicle of the 50 Years from 1975 to 2024, Destino, 2024).

Furthermore, he curated the exhibitions Realismo de Vanguardia (Avant-Garde Realism, 1997), Realismo en Catalunya (Realism in Catalonia, 1999), and Xavier Prat. Y en otra ciudad también amanece (Xavier Prat: And in Another City It Also Dawns, 2017). A member of the Royal Academy of Belles Lletres of Barcelona, he was coordinator of the Year of the Book and Reading in 2005. Vila-Sanjuán was awarded the National Prize for Cultural Journalism in 2020, and the Collegial Association of Writers of Catalonia (ACEC) Giménez Frontín Prize for Dialogue among Cultures.
