Salvador A. Benitah

After studying in Canada (McGill University), Madrid (Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas – Institute of Biomedical Research) and London (London Research Institute), Salvador A. Benitah is now a biochemist specialising in stem cells. Since 2006 he has been working in Barcelona as a researcher in the ICREA programme, first in the Centre for Genomic Regulation and presently in the Institute of Biomedical Research. His research has been focused on the molecular mechanisms that enable the appearance of cancer in adult stem cells, or that bring about the onset of ageing. He has published papers on these questions in the leading international scientific journals including Nature. He has received several awards including a post-doctoral Marie Curie grant (2006) and, more recently, the Banc Sabadell Prize for Biomedical Research (2014).
