Penny Siopis

Artist

Penny Siopis is a South African artist born in Vryburg in 1953. MFA from Rhodes University, Grahamstown (1976), and professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Siopis works in the field of painting, photography, film, video and installation. His work is characterized in what she calls 'poetics of vulnerability' and explores topics related with history, memory, migration, violence and sexuality.

Penny Siopis has exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions as Time and Again: A Retrospective Exhibition, at the South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2014) and the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg (2015); Red: The color of iconography in the work of the Penny Siopis at the Kznsa Gallery in Durban (2009) and Three Essays on Shame at the Freud Museum in London (2005). Her work has also SIOP formado part of the Venice Biennial (2013 and 1993), Sydney (2010), Johannesburg (1995 and 1997), Gwangju (1997) and Havana (1995).
