Nausikaä El-Mecky

An art historian and lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities at the Pompeu Fabra University, El-Mecky is a specialist in censorship and destruction of images. She has studied attacks on art from antiquity through to the contemporary era, exploring their consequences and surprising side effects. She has published several articles on these issues and, with Tomas Macsotay, has co-edited the book Toppling Things: The Visuality, Space and Affect of Monument Removal (Brill, 2021), which discusses the removal of sculptures resulting from the protests of the Black Lives Matter movement. Along similar lines, her essay The Creation of Dangerous Images in Iconoclasm, Censorship and Vandalism is about to be published by Routledge. She has been a member of Die Junge Akademie and was awarded the Maria Gräfin von Linden Award for her contributions to the humanities. Moreover, she is founder of Rebellious Teaching, an international platform for cutting-edge education.
