Nathalie de Vries

Director and co-founder of the architecture and urban planning studio MVRDV

Director and co-founder, together with Winy Maas and Jacob van Rijs, of the architecture and urban planning studio MVRDV, she is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and an international member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). She is also municipal architect in Groningen and a lecturer at the Delft University of Technology. The first woman president of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects, she has worked with such eminent professionals as Francine Houben of the Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and the American architect Jeanne Gang. Her interests include the current conditions of the city, territory, and society, in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world and, in particular, high-density collective housing. Notable examples of her projects are the WoZoCo housing complex (1997) for people over 55 years of age, Silodam, the transformation of an old silo and dam into a new residential building with offices, work, commercial, and public spaces (2003), the eco-city of Montecorvo (2008) in Logroño, the entrance to the Stedelijk Museum (2014), and the Ascension Paysagère residential complex in Rennes (2022). With the MVRDV team, she has published books including KM3 Excursions on capacities (2006) and MVRDV Buildings (2015) and has received several awards for her work, among them, the Amsterdamprijs, the Architizer A+ Award, and the Red Dot Design Prize.
