María Pilar Vinardell Martínez-Hidalgo

Chair of physiology and researcher specialised in the investigation of alternatives to animal experimentation

María Pilar Vinardell Martínez-Hidalgo is the chair of Physiology at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences at the University of Barcelona. Her research focuses on the development of alternative in vitro methods to replace the use of animal testing in studies of dermal or ocular irritation, among others, and she has published over 150 scientific articles and presented more than 200 papers and talks at national and international conferences. She has been a member of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission, a committee that evaluates the safety of cosmetic products and their ingredients, and she is currently a member of the OECD’s group of experts on skin sensitisation. She has also directed and taught courses on alternative methods to animal experimentation at the University of Barcelona and at different universities in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, among others.
