Writer, journalist and expert on China. She presently works for The Guardian and is editor of the on-line publication China Dialogue (www.chinadialogue.net). She has been a correspondent for The New York Times, The Independent and the BBC and has written, among others, the book The Search for the Panchen Lama (W. W. Norton & Company Press, 2000).
