The journalist who coined the expression Journalism 3.0, he is director of the Center for Citizen Media, a subsidiary of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society of the Harvard University Law School and Arizona State University, the aim of which is to promote and popularise grassroots or participative journalism. He is also head of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship and is Kauffman Professor of Digital Media Entrepreneurship at the Arizona State University and his goal is to help to innovate a culture of risk-taking in journalism education, working for fresh projects of citizen participation in the new media and encouraging blogs that are more geared to dialogue than text.
After finishing his degree at the University of Vermont, he obtained a scholarship for journalistic research. After having worked on a number of different newspapers, such as Detroit Free Press and Kansas City, he became a columnist for San Jose Mercury News, the Silicon Valley newspaper, and he also wrote a Weblog for SiliconValley.com.
He has written the book We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People (2004), a study that describes the importance of technological advances applied to the media and the use that citizens make of them.
