Carmelo Mesa-Lago

Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh since 1999, he has been a visiting professor at Oxford University, the Free University of Berlin, the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset (Madrid) and the Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (Latin American Centre for Human Economics, Montevideo), and has been a Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law (Munich) and the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella (Buenos Aires). He is author and editor of more than sixty books on social security and health care in Latin America, the Cuban economy and comparative economic systems. Notable among his recent books are La economía y el bienestar social en Cuba a comienzos del siglo XXI (The Economy and Social Welfare in Cuba at the Beginning of the 21st Century - Madrid, 2003), Las reformas de pensiones en América Latina y su impacto en los principios de la Seguridad Social (Pension Reforms in Latin America and their Impact in the Beginnings of Social Security - Santiago de Chile, 2004) and Reassembling Social Security: A Survey of Pension and Healthcare Reforms in Latin America (Oxford University Press, 2008).
