Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh since 1999, he has been a visiting professor at Oxford University, the Free University of Berlin, the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset (Madrid) and the Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (Latin American Centre for Human Economics, Montevideo), and has been a Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law (Munich) and the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella (Buenos Aires). He is author and editor of more than sixty books on social security and health care in Latin America, the Cuban economy and comparative economic systems.
