Bernd M. Scherer

Philosopher and director of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin

After a long career at the Goethe-Institut, where he was responsible for many areas, in 2006 he was appointed director of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, one of Germany’s leading arts centres, which focuses on the debates surrounding contemporary art, with particular emphasis on non-European cultures and societies. As a philosopher and author of several publications, his theoretical work focuses on aesthetics, the philosophy of language, semiotics and international cultural exchange. He has also curated various artistic and cultural projects, such as “Agua-Wasser”, “Über Lebenskunst”, “The Anthropocene Project” and, more recently, “100 Years of Now”. Since January 2011, Scherer has also taught at the Institute for European Ethnology of the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin.
