Antón Costas

Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Barcelona.

(Vigo, 1949). Antón Costas is an industrial engineer with a degree in Economic and Business Sciences and a doctorate in Economics. He is presently Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Barcelona, where he is director of the Research Group on Public Policy and Economic Regulation, which consists of several economists who study the effects of public policy and, in particular, the public service industries (electricity and gas, telecommunications, water supply, transport and other services). He has published numerous articles in economic reviews and twelve books on questions related with the shaping of public policy, economic reform and the economic problems of present-day societies. His activity is not exclusively limited to the academic domain since he has also participated in commissions of experts advising governments and the public administration on matters pertaining to the most appropriate public policy in areas such as the public services, housing or unemployment. He is currently working in different commissions of experts of different public and private institutions, for example the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the bank La Caixa. At present, he is president of the Advisory Board of the electricity company Endesa Catalunya and vice-president of the Cercle d’Economia (Economics Circle).
