Andrés Ibáñez

Andrés Ibáñez was born in Madrid in 1961. Music and literature have always been at the centre of his creativity. He studied piano at the Madrid Higher Conservatory of Music and read Hispanics at the Madrid Autonomous University. After leaving the Conservatory he embarked on a 10-year jazz career. In 1989 he moved to New York, where he completed his first novel and staged several plays. He has authored the novels La música del mundo (2003), winner of the Ojo Crítico Award), El mundo en la era de Varick (1999) and La sombra del pájaro lira (2003); a novel for young readers, El parque prohibido (2005) and a book of short stores, El perfume del cardamomo (2008, winner of the NH Short Stories Award,). His latest work is entitled Memorias de un hombre de madera (2009, winner of the Tristana Award presented by the Santander City Council).
His books have been translated into German, Dutch and French. He also pens a literature and music review column in the cultural supplement of the Spanish daily newspaper ABC, entitled "Comunicados de la tortuga celeste".
