Alex Nicolaev (Elgio)

Alex Nicolaev, known artistically as Elgio, is a rapper born in Moldova and based in Sabadell (Barcelona). A former member of the musical collective La Insurgencia, his songs focus on social issues such as evictions, corruption and police violence. In 2017, Elgio was convicted along with eleven other members of the group for glorifying terrorism due to the lyrics of his songs, initially facing a sentence of two years and one day in prison. Subsequently, the sentence was reduced to six months and one day, in addition to a fine and several years of public disqualification. His case is currently pending review by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
