Synopsis: In the 19th and 20th centuries, the word “revolution” was closely linked to violence. Recent times have seen a kind of exorcism of its radical or disruptive nature, as if to strip the revolutionary phenomenon of this demon by means of adjectives (Jasmin Revolution, Velvet Revolution, etc.) or using the mere prestige of the word and its images as a hook. This piece analyses certain visual aspects of the theme, along with comments from historians Enzo Traverso and Maria Soliña Barreiro, featured in “La Revolución revisitada” (Revolution revisited), and Hellenist Agustín García Calvo, with excerpts of recordings of his speeches at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid during the camp-outs of the 15-M movement.
