Ignacio Cirac. What will we be able to do with quantum computers?
Ignacio Cirac is the director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany) and one of the world’s leading pioneers in quantum computing. Together with Austrian physicist Peter Zoller, he was the first to propose how a quantum computer could be built. In this interview, he explains what quantum computers are, how they work and how they could revolutionise communications and cybersecurity, thanks to their ability to perform calculations that conventional computers simply cannot handle. He also reflects on the geostrategic implications of the race between the United States, China and Europe to take the lead in this technology.
