Chris Ware

The Memory of Objects

Workshop with Cristina Daura

Courses and workshops

There are objects that are physically trapped in Chris Ware’s characterizations. In this workshop, we’ll be creating the (life) history of some of the objects that have accompanied his characters, with the aim of narrating and bringing to life elements that may seem to be in the background.

One of the characteristic features of Ware’s comics is nostalgia, the stories and answers that the past can give us. Each character has a story to tell, the one they are living and the one they have lived. The spaces are fundamental, but so are the objects that also define the characters, be it a photograph, a toy, a book, a sock, a coin or some flowers. There elements are physically trapped in the depiction of their characters that help us to understand them better.

This workshop aims to give a story to these objects. Each attendee will receive a vignette from one of Ware’s works, showing an object in a situation that seems to have no context. Taking this vignette as a starting point, they will construct the narrative of this object: Whose is it? Where is it from? What role does it play in the story? Is it the main character or just an amulet or object that changes the course of the protagonist’s life? In this way, we can link it to our own lives and give it a separate story.
