Tropical rainforests

The lives of the rainforest

Amazon, Congo and West Papua

Debate

Journalist Jean Wyllys, activist Raki Ap and Survival International member Shailini Vora discuss with Claudi Carreras, curator and cultural producer, the importance of the Amazon, Congo and West Papua rainforests, the world's three largest tropical forests, to the future of the planet.

The Amazon, with an area of 5.5 million square kilometers, covers up to eight countries in South America and contains approximately 30% of the planet's insect, plant and animal species. The Congo rainforest covers 3.7 million square kilometers and is home to up to 600 tree species and 10,000 animal species, while the West Papua rainforest is home to some 20,000 plant species, 602 bird species and 125 mammal species. All of them are endangered under the threat of deforestation, fires, hunting, poaching, mining and other forms of violent extraction. Also suffering persecution are the indigenous peoples, 850 ethnic groups that are the living repositories of knowledge about the conservation of these extraordinary biomes. Through different expert voices, we will talk about the situation of these three great reserves of the biosphere, as essential to life on Earth as they are vulnerable.
