Rituals of transfiguration

The CCCB's cinema

Audiovisuals

In this session, in the framework of the exhibition "1,000 m2 of Desire. Architecture and Sexuality", we see three essential pieces of US experimental film. Barbara Rubin, Kenneth Anger and Jack Smith film their respective transgressive visions of the body and desire located in the space of pure fantasy.

In Christmas on Earth, Rubin filmed an orgy in an unspecified place, outside time and space. The double superposed screening of this film played out differently in each session. Lucifer Rising, meanwhile, developed Anger’s fascination with occultism, Aleister Crowley and the ancient Egyptian imaginary. This film created its own mythology around the participants (Marianne Faithfull, Mick Jagger’s brother and the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, among others) and the vicissitudes of the original filming. In Flaming Creatures, Smith played at filming apparently disconnected situations, verging on performance, in a film that earned its maker a trial for obscenity.

Christmas on Earth, Barbara Rubin, 1963, 29 min; Lucifer Rising, Kenneth Anger, 1972, 29 min; Flaming Creatures, Jack Smith, 1963, 45 min.

16mm screening. 18 years and over.
