Raül Refree + Groove Transformer

Open Rehearsal

Music

Raül Refree presents a duet with Groove Transformer, a real-time system developed by Behzad Haki and Sergi Jordà in the Music Technology Group (MTG) at Pompeu Fabra University.

Groove Transformer responds to the rhythmic information of human performers and accompanies them accordingly. Though based on state-of-the-art neural networks, one of its main goals is to be light enough to be used in real time on any laptop. Groove Transformer is being continuously developed, and Raül Refree and its creators have spent months working together to adjust the system. This event, conceived as an open rehearsal, marks its public debut, offering the audience the first viewing of this unique, evolving collaboration.

Behzad Haki is completing his doctorate in intelligent percussion agents in the Music Technology Group (MTG) at Pompeu Fabra University, under the direction of Sergi Jordà. Behzad’s research centres primarily on the development of AI-based, lightweight, free, open-source generative tools. In collaboration with Nick Evans, fellow doctoral student in the MTG, they have developed an open hardware module that facilitates the integration of AI algorithms into music production and performance setups.

Participants: Raül Refree, Sergi Jordà
