Meeting with Hanif Kureishi
The multitalented British writer talks with Alicia Kopf
Debate
Taking advantage of the presentation of the Catalan and Spanish versions of his latest novel The Nothing, the British writer Hanif Kureishi, author of books such as The Buddha of Suburbia and Something to Tell You, and screenwriter for films such as Sammy and Rosie Get Laid and My Beautiful Laundrette, talks with Alicia Kopf.
Hanif Kureishi is a multitalented writer who, over the course of his literary career, has cultivated different genres. He is a novelist, essayist, playwright and screenwriter. In his works, he has tackled issues such as race, nationalism, immigration and sexuality. In 2008, The Times included him in its list of the fifty best writers since 1945.
His novel The Nothing (Faber & Faber, 2017) tells the story of a love triangle formed by an elderly film director in frail health, his wife and a young film critic. Showing off his darkest humour, Kureishi explores the misfortunes of old age and physical decrepitude, the sordidness of marital and sexual conflicts, and the secret mechanisms of artistic creativity. The result: a very dark tragicomedy, a ferocious, irreverent, bleak yet highly amusing novel.
