L'Alternativa 2023

30th Barcelona Independent Film Festival

Audiovisuals + Festivals

This year the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l’Alternativa, is celebrating its 30th edition. Three decades, always with the CCCB as the main venue, supporting independent cinema committed to the language of film, creative freedom and the reality of the world we live in today. All this time, l’Alternativa has remained faithful to its essential spirit, prioritising its role as a place for people to meet, share, celebrate and learn together.

L’Alternativa’s programme combines films by renowned cineastes with new voices that are destined to have a long future ahead of them on the festival circuit. L’Alternativa has three official competition sections: Spanish films, international feature films and international short films. Alternativa Parallel will hold a retrospective on filmmaker Tatiana Huezo, a satellite dedicated to Clara Roquet, a special on the 30 years of l’Alternativa (where, in collaboration with the Catalan Association of Film Critics and Writers, nine films previously shown at the festival will be rescreened, each accompanied by a podcast on Radio l’Alternativa), as well as the festival’s special Sections offering sneak previews of the best independent cinema, and the section aimed at the youngest audiences, namely Little Experiments.

L’Alternativa Hall has a multidisciplinary, participatory programme focused primarily on a younger target that combines screenings with discussions; a free activity open to everyone that acts as a meeting place for the festival. And, in addition to the festival’s films, l’Alternativa Activities organises talks, masterclasses, debates, family workshops and Film School seminars.

L'Alternativa Pro will also hold the 14th Professional Symposium and Cinema Pendent, including a number of activities to boost the development of projects currently under production. For instance, one activity will be dedicated to “eco managers” while there’ll be two addressing the issue of artificial intelligence, related to the CCCB’s exhibition AI: Artificial Intelligence: one being a talk on (mis)trusting images today and the other entitled “Body AI”, a workshop on film and corporality using AI tools.

Moreover, in line with its mission to promote and support the work by cineastes who’ve taken part in previous years, l’Alternativa also helps to raise awareness and boost the visibility of the films selected beyond the festival itself.
