"In the Troubled Air..."
Laia Abril and Marta Gili
Histories of Misogyny
Debate
The multidisciplinary artist Laia Abril and the art critic and curator Marta Gili discuss the construction of truth through photography.
Artistic research methodology in the field of photography has the ability to generate spaces of uncertainty, discreetly moving between what is perceptible and what is imperceptible. This technique allows for questioning and reconfiguring the ways in which images can construct knowledge, revealing not only what is seen but also what remains hidden.
Based on A History of Misogyny, one of Laia Abril’s most renowned works, we will explore photography’s potential and reflect on how myths, beliefs, and prejudices shape the "politics of truth." This project, which delves into the historical and cultural roots of misogyny, invites us to examine how dominant narratives can normalize gender-based violence and reinforce inequalities. Laia Abril’s perspective highlights how photography can serve as a tool to destabilize established narratives and challenge the discourses that have shaped our understanding of social reality.
This conversation is part of the course Critical Imagination, organized by the Institut d’Humanitats de Barcelona.
