INTERNET UNIVERSE. Discovering the Educational Briefcase

Internet Universe is a CCCB project that proposes a critical and creative reflection on the set of technologies linked to the Internet and the unprecedented and accelerated change it is producing in our lives. The objective of the educational briefcase is to transfer these reflections to the classroom. It is formed by five educational units that allow analysis of the impact of the Internet and derived technologies at three levels of influence - person, city, and planet – and from different viewpoints. 

At these sessions, we will explain how the briefcase functions by putting into practice the units, with the aim that teaching staff can carry out the activities before developing them in the classroom and thus resolve any possible questions.

PROGRAMME

09:00 - 10:30 a.m. // Constructing the Net
Constructing the Net proposes the construction of a simulated network of telecommunications that allows the real structure of the Internet to be known from the viewpoint of both the physical infrastructure and the social implications.

10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. // Programming Logic
Programming Logic presents, through eight exercises, a tour that runs from the analysis of different codes and languages to computational thinking, in order to understand how computers communicate.

12:30 - 2:00 p.m. // Social Networks and Community Action
Social Networks and Community Action consists of an exercise to design a community action with the aid of tools 2.0, pursuing a dual objective: to show an alternative use of social networks and to reinforce pupils as political subjects involved with community.

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. // The Ecological Impact of the Internet
The Ecological Impact of the Internet unit proposes the exercise of calculating the ecological impact of two homologous processes – sending an email or a letter – with the aim of raising awareness of this impact and of learning measures to minimise it.

5:15 - 6:15 p.m. // Building Knowledge
Building Knowledge is proposed as a practical introduction to Wikipedia based on the concepts worked in other units of the Internet Universe briefcase as a pretext for teaching pupils to move around the Internet as active and independent users.
