Geert Lovink and Joana Moll

Democratising the Internet

Debate

The researcher Geert Lovink speaks with the artist Joana Moll about the power accumulated by the big digital platforms and its impact on the quality of democracy.

On average, people spend seven hours a day online and browsing social networks. This is happening in a media ecosystem which, far from the early dream of an open, decentralised Internet, has now become a reality that is controlled by big corporations like Google and Meta. In his book Stuck on the Platform: Reclaiming the Internet (in Spanish, Atascados en la plataforma. Reclamando Internet, Bellaterra, 2023), the researcher Geert Lovink analyses the power of seduction of these platforms and suggests ways to escape from this. The director of the Institute of Network Cultures believes that an Internet understood as public infrastructure is essential for the future of democracy. What risks does the present digital model entail? What form will the Internet of the future take?
