Free with pre-booking

Bernd Scherer (House of the Cultures of the World, Berlin), Mathieu Potte-Bonneville (Centre Pompidou, Paris) and Judit Carrera (CCCB) will be talking to culture journalist Alex Vicente about the urgency of transforming culture institutions to make them more open and accessible at a time when the very principles of democracy are under dispute in Europe.

From climate emergency to postcolonial gender debate and the rise of authoritarianism, the broad lines of tension running through public debate today are also shaking the foundations of cultural institutions. Some museums have begun to reorganize and revise their collections in a critical dialogue with their past, generally accepting the urgent need for transformation in order to become increasingly open, plural, diverse spaces. The underlying question is how culture and the arts can help sustain and promote the principles of an open society when collective freedoms are being cut back. How can we guarantee that the museum of the future is a space for the construction of shared worlds, for experimentation and freedom?

Within Cultures d’Avenir project, the directors of the three arts centres reflect in this session on the big challenges facing culture and the arts today. Anne Tallineau, secretary-general of the Franco-German Youth Office, is presenting the event.

«Cultures d'Avenir» is a project run by the Franco-German Youth Office (OFAJ) in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, House of the Cultures of the World (HKW) and the CCCB.
