DocsBarcelona 2017

International Documentary Film Festival

Audiovisuals + Festivals

DocsBarcelona celebrates two decades of history increasing the number of screenings. The Official Section will include 38 titles to competition, distributed in three sections: Panorama, a selection of the most recent and relevant documentaries in the international scene; Latitud, reserved to productions from Spain, Portugal and Latin America; and What the Doc?, a new window for extreme and innovative films.

This year DocsBarcelona opens and closes its program with two films directed by women, Amazona (Clare Weiskopf) and La Chana (Lucija Stojevic). In addition, around 50% of the movies are directed or co-directed by women. On Friday 26 May at 17:30h the festival will celebrate a round table opened to the public with five female directors – Debra Zimmerman, Roser Corella, Bobbi Jo Hart, Lucija Stojevic and Clare Weiskopf – to gain more in-depth knowledge of the new directions and perspectives of documentary filmmaking.

Besides Amazona and La Chana, five more titles revolve around female topics. Fallen Flowers, Thick Leaves, Jericó, Siberian Love, Madame Saïdi and Girasoles de Nicaragua.

The relationship between parents and children, an universal topic that implicates every one of us, also has an outstanding presence in the programm of this year’s festival. Childhood experiences, the barriers between freedom and responsibility when taking care of a child, the power of love and alternative educational methods: In loco parentis, You have no idea how much I love you, Deux Cancres (Pair of Dunces), Life to come, Al otro lado del muro and Sasha.

Thanks to the compromise of the filmmakers, the festival will bring us closer to the conflicts of Colombia, Siria or Somalia, two court cases that have shaken the world (Hacking Justice and The Promise), the textile mills in India and the new voices of investigative journalism, among many other topics. In all cases, the documentary offers an unseen look through a unique and exceptional material, becoming a brave testimony of our times.
