Free with pre-booking

Davi Kopenawa, leader of the Yanomami community, and anthropologist Ana Maria A. Machado speak about a meeting of worlds in this seminar co-organised by the CCCB and CINAF-UB, in the framework of Inter-Saberes. Dialogues with Indigenous Peoples.

In the last 60 years, the Yanomami people, one of the largest of the Indigenous groups in Brazil, have faced a series of challenges arising from the large-scale development projects being carried out in their rainforest habitat of the Brazilian Amazon. Attempts to defend their rights and demarcation of their territory took the form of the struggle of Yanomami leaders like Davi Kopenawa, and the alliances they established over the years with anthropologists, artists, missionaries, and other парёрё (non-Indigenous people). These alliances span generations, as a meeting of worlds, in the struggle for Yanomami rights. The result must stay true to an ethics and a commitment that are the basis of an ethnographic pact that is not confined to anthropology but most also address and question both social and human sciences and environmental sciences.

The programme “Inter-Saberes: Dialogues with Indigenous Peoples” seeks to promote, in dialogue format, an exchange of knowledge among Indigenous artists, academics, activists, and other audiences and experts from Europe. The aim is to open up a space for listening and debate on current issues, with Indigenous experiences and initiatives as the core concern.

In collaboration with: CINAF-UB (Study Group on Indigenous and Afro-American Cultures-University of Barcelona), and AlterNativa - Intercanvi amb Pobles Indígenes (AlterNative – Exchange with Indigenous Peoples). With the support of the Catalan Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Moderators: Aníbal G. Arregui

Participants: Davi Kopenawa, Ana Maria A. Machado
