Conversation with Gabi Martínez

A True Change

Debate

Free

In this session the writer Gabi Martínez, who is considered to be one of the most outstanding figures of Spanish fiction, will speak about our relationship with nature on the occasion of the forthcoming publication of his latest book Un cambio de verdad (A True Change, Seix Barral 2020).

Gabi Martínez’s work speaks of people and animals who, as apparent outsiders, have a powerful influence in a setting that also takes on prominence. He draws on his experiences with the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to speak of biodiversity, climate change, and the Invisible Animals project when conversing with the director of La Marea, Magda Bandera, about how he ended up becoming a shepherd of black sheep, and questioning himself about what we can do to change our relationship with nature and how to explain it. Do open fields, rivers, and mountains hold the secret of moral recovery? How does landscape affect us? And nowadays, in the context of the current crisis, why do we blame animals like the pangolin and the bat for the coronavirus which is presently causing a worldwide upheaval?

Presenters: Magda Bandera
