He has edited Granta since 1995, having first started out as a journalist on a Scottish weekly newspaper in the 1960s. From 1970 until 1986 he worked for the Sunday Times as a reporter, editor, feature writer and foreign correspondent. A co-founder of the Independent on Sunday in 1989, he was the paper's editor from 1991 until 1995. He has received various awards in the UK, including those for reporter, journalist and editor of the year. He is the author of the book Before the Oil Ran Out (1997).
