Claribel Alegría

She is a poet, narrator, essayist and translator of the poetry of Robert Graves, as well as many other English language authors.

Born in Estelí, Nicaragua, in 1924. Her mother was from El Salvador, where the author lived until the age of nine months. She studied in Santa Ana and later in the United States, where she took a degree in literature. She married the North American diplomat Darwin J. Flakoll, with whom she has written various books about Nicaragua, including Fugues (1992) and Death of Somoza (1993). For this writer, Nicaragua is her motherland and El Salvador her fatherland. José Vasconcelos gave her the name by which all lovers of literature now know her: Claribel Alegría. It was Vasconcelos who wrote the prologue to her first publication, Anillo de silencio (1948). Her works include: Huésped de mi tiempo (1961), Raíces (1975), Sobrevivo (1977), and Este poemario (1988).
