In 1953 writer William S. Burroughs, evaded the laws of the United States and Mexico in search of hallucinogenic drugs, believing that they would help him to escape from his addiction to heroin. During his travels he wrote letters from Panama to his friend Allen Ginsberg which were used as the basis for the fictional work The Yage Letters.
