Arnaldo Antunes

(São Paulo, Brasil)

Born in São Paulo. He was involved in music, poetry, video and performance groups and was a member of Titãs, based in São Paulo, one of the biggest Brazilian rock groups of the eighties, from 1982 to 1992. He was Titãs' lead singer and composer, making seven records with them, and wrote some of the group's biggest hits, such as Bichos Escrotos (with Sérgio Britto/Nando Reis), Comida (with Marcelo Fromer/Sérgio Britto), O Que, Família (with Tony Bellotto), Miséria (with Sérgio Britto/Paulo Miklos) and O Pulso (with Marcelo Fromer/Tony Bellotto). He continued to write and publish books of poetry while part of the group. After leaving Titãs, he continued to compose for them. His songs are included on the albums Titanomaquia (1993), Domingo (1995), Acústico (1996, on which he took part in one song) and Volume 2 (1998). As a solo singer, composer, poet and video artist, he began his career by launching the disc-book-video Nome in 1993, which was followed by Ninguém (1995), O Silêncio (1996) and Um Som (1998). Various singers have recorded his compositions: Marisa Monte (Beija Eu, Volte para o Seu Lar and others), Jorge Ben Jor (Cabelo), Gilberto Gil (A Ciência em Si), Rita Lee (O Que Você Quer), Ney Matogrosso (Comida) and many more. He also became one of the most highly considered names in contemporary Brazilian poetry and his poems feature in international anthologies. In 1999 he composed the music of the show O Corpo, for the dance company Corpo, which was brought out as a disc in 2000. Later, in 2002, in collaboration with Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown, he brought out the CD Tribalistas, with which they created a new musical aesthetic.
