Carles Guerra

An artist, critic and lecturer in Contemporary Art at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona and freelance curator.

(Amposta, 1965) he is concerned in his work with the uses made of the image in the fields of education, the media and contemporary art, and also the cultural policies of post-Fordism. He has been curator of the exhibitions Art & Language in Practice (Fundació Antoni Tàpies, 1999), Deixar de fer una exposició. Perejaume (Stop Doing an Exhibition: Perejaume – MACBA, 1999), and Després de la noticia. Documentals postmèdia (After the News: Postmedia Documentaries – CCCB, 2003). He has worked with several national and international publications as well as being an editorial adviser for the “Cultura/s” supplement of the daily La Vanguardia. Besides lecturing in Contemporary Art at the Pompeu Fabra University, he works with the Postgraduate Programme in Visual Culture Studies at the University of Barcelona, and the master’s degrees in Communication and Art Criticism and in Tourism at the University of Girona. He has been a visiting fellow at the Center for Curatorial Studies of Bard College (New York), the Konstfack University (Stockholm), and at the Haute École d’Art et Média at the University of Geneva. Moreover, he has participated in the televisuality study group of the Media Studies Program at the New School (New York) and has also worked with the Xcèntric Festival and the “Soy cámara” (I’m a Camera) programme at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. His most recent productions are "Oficina per a la tematització de la joventut", (Office for a Thematicisation of Youth, 1999-2000), "N de Negri. Conversacions amb Toni Negri a cura de Carles Guerra" (N Is for Negri: Carles Guerra’s Conversations with Toni Negri, 2000), and “Allan Sekula habla con Carles Guerra” (Allan Sekula Speaks with Carles Guerra, 2005). He was appointed director of the “Primavera Fotogràfica de Catalunya” (Photographic Spring of Catalonia) festival in 2004 and, in 2009, was nominated as director of the Virreina Image Centre of Barcelona.
